A Personal Account (as told by Larry Yochum, Youth Director)
Socially distance work where we lived as a family for the week but served separate from the community. We took many steps to keep us safe from COVID-19 during our travels. To break up the trip, we stopped at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Crossville, TN both ways.
We did many physical activities like cleaning the exterior of the new missions building, painting, digging, and landscaping. We wrote letters of encouragement and prayer to the staff and took a short walk to pray over the community.
We lived in the mission building where we worked and cooked our own meals. Youth learned and put into practice principles of leadership. We also spent 45 minutes every morning in God’s Word. Every evening ended with team time where we shared thoughts and learnings, encouraged one another and had a devotion time.
After all was done, we hung out, played games, read, or simply talked about life and faith.
As a celebration of the work done, we went to a private beach on Friday to swim. We had supper and then went back to the beach to have a fire and our final team time. Saturday, we stopped on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a hike and lunch.
Going into this trip, the youth did not know each other yet became one of the tightest and caring groups of youth I have served in. Many have unique faith experiences that were grown through God’s work on this trip.
